Titania Jordan: “Classrooms Go Phone-Free To Improve Learning And Teaching Conditions!”
As the summer winds down, there is a new initiative for students coming back to school. Specifically, schools will be experimenting with a school year by going smartphone free. Why? Well there’s a plenitude of problems associated with cell phone use at schools, which we will dig deeper because it affects us all.
Smartphones are essentially super portable computers we can all use in the palm of our hands. However, a specific demographic and age group is severely impacted from its daily use. For example, smartphones cause the following behavioral and psychological problems with a younger demographic:
- Anxiety
- Cyberbullying
- Depression
- Suicide
- Disordered eating
- Sleep disorder
- Short attention spans
- Mental health concerns
The list goes on and on how the mental health crisis spiraled out of control. In addition, the COVID-19 pandemic, the excessive use of these devices, and social media created the perfect storm. Naturally, something needed to be done in schools to start addressing a problem.
