Meta Slapped With Historic Fine Over Data Transfers

Yes, you read that right. Meta, aka Facebook, has received a record-setting fine of $1.3 billion for transferring EU data to the US. This historic fine stems from a complaint dating back to 2013 (a decade old) and constitutes privacy violations in the EU.

According to The Verge report, the ruling was made by Ireland’s Data Protection Commission (DPC). In addition, it identified risks associated with exposing sensitive information through these data transfers that are a direct violation of the General Data Protection Legislation (GDPR).

At the end of the day, Meta is relying on its business model by selling user data. Think about it for a second. Facebook’s massive ad-targeting operation relies on harvesting user data from the EU and from other places. And with the Verge’s analysis, they are threatening to discontinue operations for Facebook and Instagram in the EU.

Doesn’t this sound familiar at all this ongoing debate? TikTok is facing the possibility of a ban. However, they have not been subject to a fine of this scale or a demand to stop…
