The Era Of Sharing News Is Dead
First there was radio, television and newspapers. Fast-forward to 2023, the media ecosystem is unrecognizable and dominated by social media platforms across the board. What also changed is the perception of news and how it is disseminated online via different channels.
Interactions with the news has evolved from the days of offering a healthy variety of sources and voices in a news report. Today, because of the impact by technology companies like Google, Facebook, Twitter, and Apple journalism is more like an echo chamber. Meaning, we are segmented and distributed by likeminded people instead of the latter.
A report by the Nieman Journalism Lab confirmed that commenting and sharing news has declined significantly. The analysis was compiled by Oxford’s Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism (RISJ), which can be found in the 2023 Digital News Report.
The RISJ has released news reports since 2012. In this years research, the organization surveyed over 90,0000 people from 46 countries about their news consumption.
