Considering all of the public relations efforts in the past year by TikTok has led to hitting a brick wall. According to a New York Times report, an inquiry by the parent company, ByteDance, found that employees used data from two journalists.

I suppose the tentative deal between TikTok and the Biden Administration did not discourage legislative action against the app. Instead it seems to have motivated or perhaps emboldened elected officials from both sides of the aisle to diminish its success in the U.S. since it is widely used.

As reported by Mashable, ByteDance conducted an internal investigation into its data practices. As it turns out, four employees from the company obtained data from TikTok account belonging to journalists.

The topic of censorship and free speech in the U.S. is the pillar of democracy and the fourth estate. On the other hand, in China free speech only works if it does not criticize the government. Otherwise, the persecution of individuals going agains the state run into retribution.
